Satta King, also known as Satta Matka, is a gambling/lottery game that originated in India around the 1950s after India gained its independence. Satta King then grew popular around the years of the 1980s t0 1990s until the Mumbi police got down on Satta King, which led to most people going to cricket matches or online lottery. Matka got its name from a large earthenware pot made in India that is used to pick out lottery numbers or cards. Other ways of generating money were pulling slips from the pot or drawing playing cards. The founder of Satta King, Ratan Khatri, was also the king of Satta.
Satta began when people betted on the opening and closing of cotton rates that were transported to the Bombay Cotton Exchange to the New York Cotton Exchange. Then in 1961, the New York Cotton Exchange tried to stop the game, but people were finding alternate ways to play the game. Popular players include the three Satta Kings, a term given to people who have earned the most money in Satta. The three kings include Kalyanji Bhagat, a grocery store owner and the one who pioneered Satta King; Suresh Bhagat, who was a big name for the game until news got around that his mother and son were plotting to kill him; and last is Ratan Khatri, who had a whole business surrounding the gambling game, located in Mumbadevi.
Other players throughout history include mill workers, which resulted in many shops opening around the mill areas. It also helped give Central Mumbi the title of being the biggest hub for Satta King.
